Clavister releases a Firewall Appliance [2001-09-24]IT-Security company Clavister launches, for the first time, a line of hardware based firewalls, which contain Clavister's award winning firewalling technology. The result is a new Firewall Appliance, a key ready firewall with outstanding performance and functionality. This is similar to the software-based firewall, but is now complemented with a suitable hardware. The price will be very competitive with similar products from other vendors.
-We feel that small to medium companies and smaller local divisions within larger companies and organisations are looking for a key ready firewall that they can simply unpack and hook up in order to get "up and running". To satisfy this need we created the Firewall Appliance, says Peter Johansson, President of Clavister.
Until now other firewall vendors have not been challenged in this segment of the market, but when Clavister's Firewall Appliance hits the market at the end of November (2001), Clavister will be offering a firewall with enterprise capacity at a price far below competitors products.
- A Clavister FA 2300 containing an unlimited license is three to four times less expensive than competitor's models, which do not even meet Clavister's performance level, says John Vestberg, R&D director at Clavister.
Clavister's software-based firewall is one of the markets most powerful and now that Clavister has a Firewall Appliance their customers will no longer have to utilise a dedicated server and as a result the installation and configuration procedures are simplified. With the addition of the firewall appliance Clavister can now better guarantee the quality of the entire installation. A good software running on a questionable hardware lowers the overall operational security.
The Firewall Appliance requires extremely little space in comparison to its outstanding performance. The Firewall Appliance is designed for rack mounting and measures 1 U or 2 U in height, which is around 4,5 or 9 cm high, depending on capacity and functionality.
The series comprises of two models, FA 1100 and FA 2300. FA 1100 has a maximum capacity of 500 Mbit/s and is 1 U in height. The FA 2300 has a maximum capacity in excess of 1 Gbit/s and has a height of 2 U.
The FA series also supports Clavister's High availability option, which is one component of Clavister's 7.0 product family. The High availability option provides fail over functionality that allows two or more firewalls to co-ordinate if a communication problem should arise.
-Sometimes customers ask for, and even choose lower quality, firewalls just because they are hardware based. With the addition of the Clavister FA to the firewall market we believe the there will be a new trend in the firewall market, says Michael Green, business development manager at Nexus.
