Secure UMA networks with Clavister [2006-06-26]Clavister, the Swedish vendor of high performance IT/IP security solutions, has
announced the 5500 series of its new UMA Security Gateway product family. With this
announcement, the company is reacting on the rapidly growing UMA market
(Unlicensed Mobile Access) that according to statements of well-established market
research companies will comprise more than 300 million subscribers already by 2009.
End devices are already today available from vendors such as Alcatel, Ericsson,
Motorola, Nokia, or BenQ. The UMA technology offers enterprises and users the
worldwide first true mobile solution for cellular WLAN access and thus is the mobile
platform of choice for future VoIP services. According to surveys by Motorola, about
50 percent of the Europeans would be seriously interested in and would decide in
favor of a UMA service.
"The growth engines for UMA are fuelled amongst others by the requirements of users (only
one single mobile phone for all services), by free phoning such as from Skype and by the
mobile radio providers who are able to create a significant source of revenue via home
zones", says Peter Johansson, CEO of Clavister. "When integrating new technologies such
as UMA or services into existing network infrastructures the protection of these structures
has to be of prime importance. For this reason, we have developed the UMA Security
Gateway 5500 series that offers this protection without compromising the performance of
network or services."
Clavister has developed the UMA Security Gateway particularly for use in mobile network
structures. The scalable system based on the highly optimized network security operating
system from Clavister has been designed with a 19 inch form factor and can hold up to 8 hot
swappable Security Gateway elements. It includes 6 + 1 redundant auto load sharing power
supply modules, 4 redundant hot swappable fans, one KVM blade for remote management
and is also RoHS compliant.
Even in the base version the system supports 50,000 (400,000 maximum) concurrent IPSec
Tunnels and 3,000 UMA voice connections (24,000 maximum). Each Security Gateway
module supports 2 Gbps Layer 3 Routing Throughput (16 maximum), 10 million concurrent
sessions (80 million maximum) as well as 10 to 1,000 (8,000 maximum) additional virtual
systems and routers.
The 5500 series provides enterprises with a powerful and low-cost Gateway Security system
that particularly addresses all UMA requirements of companies.
