Revolutionary City Network Project in Örnsköldsvik slated to become national standard [2001-03-09]Enternet Technologies, developer of IT and IP security solutions, and electricity provider Örnsköldsvik Energi team up with ten partners in developing broadband city network independant of service providers. The network boasts built-in security functions and quality of service with bandwidth allocation for each individual service.
Swedish IT and IP security technology company EnterNet Technologies and Örnsköldsvik Energi has built a fiber-optic network during the past couple of years. The constellation has been a very successful one where Örnsköldsvik Energi has been providing competence around the physical production of the network, while EnterNet Technologies has added its knowledge in IP and IT along with the security itself. As the project has progressed, several new service providing partners have joined with their services offerings in various areas. Well known names such as Dynarc, MTG/VIASAT, Tele2, Telitel, Örnsköldsviks Allehanda, Örnsköldsviks Kommun and ÖviksHem will fill the network with services, all delivered with quality of service and bandwidth guarantees.
Security and traffic priority are key factors in the successful implementation of true quality of service. In November last year, EnterNet Technologies demonstrated that their technology can deliver a complex mix of services in a network such as the Örnsköldsvik City network, and that these services can be delivered to the end user with both quality and bandwidth guarantees. In the demonstration a "family" setting with one member watching a DVD-quality movie while the others were engaged in various forms of entertainment, such as Internet radio, high speed surfing and another movie, was used to prove that true quality of service (QoS) indeed worked. To further prove the point, QoS was turned off and the audience could easily see that movies and other services were disturbed by other services' un-controlled bandwith consumption. Service and content providers witnessing the demonstration stated that it was the first time they had seen a solution that truly can guarantee quality delivery of their offerings, and
that this is an absolute necessity when they want to deliver their content and services such as IP telephony, video on demand and Internet radio.
The security of the network is implemented by centrally controlled distributed firewalls built on EnterNet Technologies unique, compact and operating system independant security kernel. Hackers are unable to disturb the services or break into the users' personal computers. The EnterNet principle of being protected but not disturbed by the protection was successfully proven.
Örnsköldsvik's city network will be evaluated by 50 families that have access to the service and content offerings. After that, commercial operations will start, and the content of the network will be offered in a true competitive environment made possible by the fact that the technology is completely operator and provider independant, the latter expected to become a requirement by the Swedish PTS (Post- och Telestyrelsen, goverment regulatory body for communications and operators). Alll in all, the Örnsköldsvik city network is slated to become a template for all city networks in the country. << Back
